The Vyne Reconstruction Project/Hands on Shops of Mortimer Event/Medieval Quiz - Truth or Fiction
So, what have we been up to since the September newsletter? In October we had an ‘all hands on deck’ meeting to get as much information about the shops and services in Mortimer from about 1950 onward, and are delighted that so many people came and contributed to our knowledge. A small group subsequently met to collate all the information, and we hope to produce a board detailing some of the contributions, which will see its first outing at our Christmas Party in January (yes, I know!). In November, Chris, one of the very knowledgeable volunteers from The Vyne, just six miles from Mortimer and with Mortimer connections, came to give us a virtual tour of this fascinating house, and also to tell us about some of the restoration work going on there. I’m sure several of us were reminded to join/rejoin the National Trust as a consequence! Our December meeting saw Steve deliver a short ‘quiz’ about medieval life, which challenged some of our preconceptions, and after our mince pie break, Carolyn detailed events and activities associated with past Mortimer Christmases, illustrated with some of the photos from our extensive collection. We have now had a meeting to think about our programme for the first half of the year, so watch this space…
